Dark circles are one of the most common skin worries and one of the most stubborn. Before you spend on a fix, it helps to know which kind you have, because the cause decides what will and will not help.

For the practical side, see our guide on how to reduce dark circles and puffy eyes. This piece is about the why.

The structural causes

Often it is simply anatomy. The skin under your eyes is the thinnest on your body, so the blood vessels beneath show through as a bluish or purple tint, especially if you are fair or tired.

Pigment is the other big one. Sun, rubbing and genetics can leave a browner dark circle tone that tends to run in families.

The lifestyle and age factors

Sleep, or the lack of it, makes everything look worse by leaving skin paler and more drawn. Fluid that pools overnight adds puffiness, which casts its own shadow.

Age plays a part too. As skin thins and we lose a little plumpness, a small hollow can form under the eye, deepening the shadow.

What you can change, and what you cannot

You cannot rewrite your genes, but you can influence the rest. Sleep, sun protection and a gentle eye routine all help the area look fresher. Cooling and massage give a quick, visible lift to puffiness, which is where the Warm & Cool Eye Energiser earns its place.

If circles appear suddenly, sit on one side only, or come with other symptoms, see your GP.

The honest version

Most dark circles are a mix of genes, structure and tiredness. You will not erase them, but the right habits and a little cooling can absolutely make tired eyes look brighter.
